This intimate play navigates some big topics in the most honest, relatable, and hopeful way. Mental health, life, love, suicidal thoughts and feelings of loneliness and being lost are talked about with candor, and are treated with courage and care.
Sweet Sixteen is about two sisters, Dunya who is 15 turning 16 and Dido, Dunya’s sister who committed suicide the day before her 16th birthday. The night before Dunya has to give a talk to her class about suicide, she tries to understand why her sister did what she did one last time. Suddenly, Dido appears in the room. They engage in conversations about life, death, and Dunya asks the burning questions she has had for a long time: why did Dido chose to end her life and how could she have done this? What was actually wrong with her? Does she even know what she did to Dunya and their parents? Why didn’t Dido ask Dunya for help?
