About Us
The Amsterdam Theatre House
Independent Stage for Creativity
Our History
The Amsterdam Theatre House has deep roots in Amsterdam's history. Located on the historic WG grounds, where once in the 17th century a plague house stood, our story truly began in 1985 as Het Amfitheater in the former lecture hall of the Wilhelmina Hospital.
After various transformations – from Gasthuis Werkplaats & Theater (1997-2008) to Frascati WG (2008-2013) – it was taken over in March 2014 under the leadership of Nanda Kling and Gertjan ten Thije and renamed The Amsterdam Theatre House.
Our Current Identity
Today, The Amsterdam Theatre House distinguishes itself as a deliberately non-subsidized theatre. This independent status is a principled choice – we believe in the power of artistic freedom without dependence on government funding. This enables us to remain autonomous and agile in shaping our programming and vision. Occasionally we apply for project subsidies for a youth performance.
In the current theatre climate, where many venues depend on subsidies, we choose a different model based on entrepreneurship and community support. This means that every performance, course, and initiative is made possible through the direct involvement of our audience, our partners and participants.
Our Mission
As an independent theatre, we want to be a vibrant meeting place where young and old, amateur and professional inspire each other. Our intimate hall accommodates 115 visitors and serves as a stage for diverse performing arts.
Through our partnerships with Het Jeugdtheaterhuis, De Theaterkamer, De Presentatie-Academie, GreyVibes, Dansexpressie and others, we have created a dynamic ecosystem where theatre art in many forms can flourish.
We proudly carry the rich history of our location with us, from medical center to creative breeding ground. As an independent theatre, we continue to innovate and explore new paths, unencumbered by the limitations that subsidy providers sometimes bring.
Just as the WG grounds have transformed over the years, we continue to adapt to the needs of the Amsterdam community, while holding onto our core values: creativity, inclusivity and artistic independence.
The Amsterdam Theatre House – where past and future come together in a celebration of independent theatre art.
